Project 2 - Interim - Part1: CIRCULATION

1st model

The first model is based on the study of levels' circulation. According to Adolf Loos, there is not level plans but continuous space. Thus I made a model consists of 3 major parts.
The bottom model represents the basement level and western part of the entrance level. In the case of Villa Muller, it sits on the 3 almost square footings, then garage, laundry and anteroom sit on top of them respectively. Following with the salon, dining and kitchen, boudoir and library contiously run circularly all the way up to the second level, which is a only "one-piece" level.

So I made the bottom level fixed together, then any level with the same height sticks together: salon with dining and kitchen, boudoir and library, host's bedrrom and chirdern room with guest apartment.

 2nd model
Inspiration: In the process of first model, I found out the public space(stairs normally) getting smaller as moving up.

This model describes the moving space getting narrow and more private as moving up in the Villa Muller.
The outside pieces are widest, as moving into the centre, the barrier becoming narrow and higher. Firstly, the direction it runs matchs with the internal levels( especially the 3 major space) running up. Secondly, it implies the circulation getting more specific for the hosts. Also, each piece blocks the view from differetn direction represents Loos's idea about the create the inside world, sort of avoiding public viewing.

3rd Model

The 3rd model is about the two distinct stairs: central service stairs and side servant stairs.
The transparent plastic is used to clearly show the stairs in the volume. Also I made it two to indicate the most relevant space each stair serves.

As model showed, the rectangular box represents the servant staircase. It is continous from the basement to the second level, even as a role of the only access to the roof space. Meanwhile, the central stairs serves much wider range and space. It is more like floating in the centre of Villa Muller.

Exterior- Model Making Process2

The two pieces of roof cut through the middle line which is the section cut we did.

Adolf Loos designed the windows which are relatively small, to illustrate the idea about creating a inside world, then the occupants do not need to associate with the outside world.

From Beginning- Model Making Process1

Initially, we decided to cut different levels on the same plan individually to distinct the space movement and leave the stairs.

In this case, the floors are like the puzzles can be put together and pull out at the same time. (First Floor - Master room and Guest Apartment)

Final submission of Drawings of Villa Muller

We tend to believe that the staircase running all the way up from the entrance level are mainly for servant area, because the connection between other rooms, spaces and the staircase itself are relatively isolated, compared with the stairs running, sometimes join the floor, in the centre.

Personlly speaking, the most interesting part attracts me are the levels different from even just the same floor pieces. In these two poster, the blue area identify the higher floor compared with the lower part on the same level, yellow painted, the most white area of all plans are the shared zone, which visitors and hosts can all enjoy the sense of movement in the building.

For the 3 little illustrates on 3 plans are the parts interest me. First is the changing room for hostess, and the second small piece are the level changes from the living area to the dining room, where the stairs turning around and keep moving. Lastly, the fire place for the beautiful finished living room.

"My architecture is not conceived in plans, but in spaces (cubes). I do not design floor plans, facades, sections. I design spaces. For me, there is no ground floor, first floor, etc...For me, there are only contiguous, continual spaces, rooms, anterooms, terraces, etc. Storeys merge and spaces relate to each other."
